“Make Art That Sells” Bootcamp: March Assignment

Jellosaurus Rex: Jello Party Crash

As I have mentioned in an earlier post, I have joined Lilla Rogers’ Make Art That Sells Bootcamp, where we are given one assignment each month to complete. This has been what I’ve been living and breathing these days!

March is over before you know it. This is one of the most overworked assignments I have done, and I am still not happy with it… partly because no matter how hard you tried and were satisfied with what you did, you look at what your classmates are doing, and they just blew your mind. Sometimes it made me want to dig a hole, hide and cry, and just forget about drawing and go flip burgers in McDonalds.

Regardless, here is the round up.

DIY: Ella’s Birthday Card

Ella's Birthday Card

One of Connor’s classmates, Ella, gave Connor a big toy truck for his birthday. Connor loves it so much! We want to do something special for her big day as well, which is today.

Apart from buying a gift, I quickly doodled up a birthday card that is semi-customized. I reused the illustration I created for Connor & His Yoga Babies Friends, changed the hair style a bit to make her look more like Ella. To be very honest, I don’t know Ella too well as I only see her occasionally at daycare pick up / drop off time, so I can’t say this reflects how she is like at all, but it is cute nonetheless! I also added more birthday elements in vibrant pink and blue.

Times When I Wish I Had a Daughter

Paper Costumes

I came across these via my Facebook News Feed. And oh boy. The times when I wish I had a daughter!

Oh wait. I don’t think I could ever be that handy, crafty or creative. Never mind.

I clicked over to the link that led me to this: e-Creativity, then Huffington Post, to the ultimate creative mama, Angie at FashionbyMayhem. Her entire collection of paper/board dresses can be viewed under her Instagram account @2sisters_angie.

My Favorites from MATS Bootcamp, February Gallery

lilla_bootcamp1_gallery_title

As I wrote about it on my previous post, I have joined the Make Art That Sells Assignment Bootcamp by the wonderful Lilla Rogers, one of the top illustration agents in the world. Each month we’ll get an assignment, which is broken down into weeks. We will finished by the third week of the month and submit to the gallery. The February gallery went live two days ago. The theme is about cuckoo clocks, and the media is cellphone cover. And there were over 400 wonderful submissions to it.

I finally had a chance to see it myself, and I was overwhelmed by it. There are a lot of talent, but there are just too many to look at! So, I picked out 20 that caught my eye, and I like the most. There are so many of them that I liked, but I want to limit to 20 so this post will somehow come to an end (!) The order is random. Below are the links to individual pieces within the gallery (which links to the artists’ respective portfolios), and reasons to why I like them:

Lilla Rogers’ Illustration Bootcamp

lilla_01_2

I have always been a huge fan of Lilla Rogers, her work, and the artists she represented. She is one of the top illustration agents, and her clients are any artists’ dream: Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Land of Nod, to name a few. I have reached out to her back in 2009, but my illustration work was not good enough to be considered by her for representation. I have just recently noticed she is holding e-courses called MATS (Make Art That Sells), and I have signed up for the boot camp class.

The boot camp class will go for a total of 6 months. Each month we will receive an assignment. The assignment is broken down into weeks. The first week we will receive the subject matter, the second week on the medium, the final week will be some extra tips, and finals will be due by the end of third week to be posted to a public gallery. We will create a total of 5 portfolio pieces at the end of the class. For the first assignment (February), we were asked to draw cuckoo clocks.

Originally I wanted to draw a cuckoo clock where my family of three will play in, sort of like the scenes in Mac Boutavant’s “Train Puzzle”. Then, I also wanted to explore the idea of a cuckoo clock in the form of a stylized Japanese temple.

Greeting Cards with Custom Portraits

yogababiesportraits_1

I have met three very dear friends from my prenatal yoga class, they all had the same due date as I did back then. Needless to say, our babies have grown to become adorable little toddlers together! We have just had our joint birthday celebration not long ago, and I wanted to recap the little custom portrait cards I have created for them.

A few weeks ago, I have created a custom thank you card with Connor’s illustrated character saying “thanks!” on the cover. So, during Connor’s naptime, I changed the hair and clothing on the illustration, and made three more characters that are custom designed for each of my toddler friends.

Birthday Collage Announcement / Invitation

Happy Birthday my big boy!

BirthdayAnnouncement_BW

Here’s another DIY project for you. There are 12 slots on this collage, and I select a photo of Connor’s each month to show his subtle growth (they go from top left to bottom right respectively). I have seen and liked the idea where you take a photo of your child, and make a list of what they enjoy at the moment, so I incorporated it with the collage too. It will be fun to look back! Train-themed Birthday

Train theme DIY birthday party (Printables)

As I was recapping our baby’s 1st year photo shoot, I found myself already slaving to create something special for his second birthday.

I don’t think Connor would remember or appreciate a birthday party yet, so I am not crazy about doing a real birthday party. A friend of mine had an idea of having a mini party at daycare, where we’ll order cupcakes and such, and go by during their 3:30pm snack time to have a small celebration. Our little ones are only 5 days apart on their birthday, so I begged her to take me on for a joint party. Continue reading

Alphabet Bunting for Nursery

Before Connor was born, I had two photo frames I wanted to hang on that wall, but my husband didn’t think it was a good idea. He thinks Connor would eventually be tall enough and start pulling on those frames, creating a potential hazard. Well, he has a point. So that wall remained empty for a long time. Continue reading
